- Outrigger or vertical: outriggers angle out from the wall at 30°, 45° or 60° so the flag hangs clear of the building. Vertical poles mount upright on brackets along the wall.
- Halyard: external halyards cost less. Internal cam cleat and winch poles keep the rope or cable inside the pole behind a locking door to deter theft and vandalism.
- Length and flag size: pick a pole long enough for the flag to fly without touching the building.
- Wall and mounting: the wall has to carry the pole and flag in high wind. Have a contractor or engineer confirm the mounting surface.
